The Midas Project, an artificial intelligence oversight organization, has filed a complaint against OpenAI, accusing the company of potentially violating tax laws and jeopardizing its nonprofit status. The complaint points out that OpenAI's board structure creates conflicts of interest, particularly the dual role of CEO Sam Altman, who is both the CEO of the for-profit entity and a board member of the nonprofit organization. The Midas Project argues that this could lead to personal benefits for Altman at the expense of the organization. OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit but has plans to transition to a for-profit structure. Elon Musk, one of the founders, has sued OpenAI, claiming the company violated the original nonprofit contract.
