Polygon Launches Heimdall v2 on PoS Mainnet—PIP-43, 44 & 62 Now Live - Crypto News Flash

  • Heimdall v2 slashes block finality to five seconds, massively boosting speed for real-time use.
  • Polygon’s rebuilt consensus layer clears old tech debt and preps the chain for a 5000+ TPS scale.

Polygon has officially rolled out Heimdall v2 on its Proof-of-Stake mainnet, activating protocol improvement proposals PIP-43, PIP-44, and PIP-62. This marks the most technically challenging upgrade since the network’s 2020 launch. With this update, block finality has been reduced from approximately one minute to just five seconds. Polygon’s team explained via X,

Fast finality helps users onboard to Polygon more seamlessly than ever before.

This upgrade brings considerable benefits across multiple layers of use. Regular users, developers, and payment providers are now positioned to take advantage of faster, more secure transaction processing. The reduced finality window makes Polygon one of the leading options for near-real-time blockchain transactions.

Sandeep Nailwal, CEO of Polygon Foundation, shared on X,

I want to take a moment to recognize the huge achievement of rolling out this upgrade. Heimdall v2 was the most technically complex upgrade the chain has seen since its 2020 launch. And arguably one of the most complicated in all crypto history, second only to the Ethereum Merge.

PolygonSource: XPolygon has now become a more viable platform for financial institutions looking to integrate tokenized assets such as T-bills, stocks, or real estate. Final settlement for regulated flows becomes quicker and more reliable under the new system.

Infrastructure Rebuilt from the Ground Up

The upgrade replaces the legacy Tendermint consensus engine with CometBFT v0.38. x, as outlined in PIP-43. In tandem, PIP-44 updates the Cosmos SDK to eliminate previous tech debt, and PIP-62 completes the transition by fully retiring Heimdall v1. The combination of these changes results in a cleaner and more streamlined consensus layer.

Polygon’s core engineering team has rebuilt the entire consensus client to enhance performance while maintaining operational reliability. This core rewrite ensures better long-term scalability and paves the way for features like single-block instant finality, which is expected to roll out in the near future.

It’s more than just changing the engine of a multibillion-dollar airplane mid-flight; it’s like redesigning it in real time while keeping every passenger safe and on course, Nailwal emphasized.

What’s Next: 5000+ TPS and Agglayer Integration

With Heimdall v2 now live, Polygon is already preparing for the next major milestone. According to the current roadmap, the network will connect to Agglayer by the end of the year. This will enable multichain liquidity and support for unified cross-chain operations.

Polygon also plans to achieve transaction throughput above 5000 TPS and launch single-block instant finality within the coming months. These improvements aim to enhance network responsiveness and reliability further, making the platform more appealing to enterprise-level users and fintech startups.

This upgrade… eradicates massive technical debt and positions it as one of the most secure, rapid… chains for onchain payment solutions, said Nailwal. Polygon delivered and we will continue to keep delivering.
