Brexit's key driver achieves breakthrough in UK election
On July 5, the right-wing populist party "Reform Britain" led by Nigel Farage seems to be a new force in British politics, winning the first seat in the election and squeezing the votes of the Conservative Party in the preliminary results. Farage, who was behind Britain's Brexit decision, ran for election only last month, a move that hit the Conservative Party, which is struggling to catch up with the center-left Labour Party. Founded in 2018 as the Brexit Party, the "Reform Britain" party changed its name in 2022 and has never won any seats in an election before. Farage's party hopes to shake up British politics by taking a hard line on immigration, as France's "National Alliance" has done, demanding the repatriation of illegal immigrants arriving by boat from France. While this will be difficult to achieve, by focusing on the issue, the party is targeting weaknesses in the Conservative Party, which has failed to "stop stowaways" as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised.
