Ilon Musk suggests humans will settle on Mars within two decades - clarification
After successfully completing a rescue mission of NASA astronauts stranded on the space station on Tuesday, SpaceX CEO Ilon Musk suggested that humans will settle on Mars within the next 20 years, speaking on a podcast with Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
"Mars needs to become self-sufficient and develop autonomously before Earth supplies stop, Musk said in a podcast published Wednesday. "This is a critical civilizational frontier beyond which the projected lifespan of civilization will be much longer. While Musk believes 20 years is a realistic timeframe for a Mars colony to thrive, it would require massive resources, a large population and a habitat capable of supporting life in the thin Martian atmosphere and extreme temperatures. "A few people running around on the surface of a hostile environment is not going to make it self-sustaining, Musk said. "It's gonna take about a million people and a million tons of supplies. Musk said that creating a self-sustaining colony on Mars is not just about sending people, but also about rebuilding the basic systems that support civilization. On Earth, "we're at the top of a huge industrial pyramid that starts with the extraction of huge amounts of materials that go through hundreds of processing steps, he said.
