Bitcoin mining has long faced two major challenges - high electricity costs and heat dissipation pressure. While major mining companies search for cheap energy on Earth, an entrepreneur from Intercosmic Energy, Nick Moran, proposed a disruptive idea: to send Bitcoin mining rigs into space, utilizing almost uninterrupted solar energy and the vacuum environment to create the most extreme mining farm in history.

Three Major Advantages of Space Mining

Moran pointed out during an interview with the YouTube channel Bitcoin Bram that space mining has three natural advantages compared to ground mining farms:

Continuous sunlight: The synchronous orbit can receive about 23 hours of sunlight daily, while the low Earth orbit has about 18 hours, almost unaffected by weather.

Free Cooling: Natural cooling through vacuum and low-temperature environments eliminates one of the mining farm's largest operating costs, the cooling system.

Zero land competition: No need to compete for land resources with agriculture, housing, or industry.

He believes that as the long-term price of Bitcoin rises and the cost of space launches is expected to decrease by 99% over the next decade, the "increasing coin price" and the "decreasing launch cost" will intersect at some point in time, making space computing power economically viable.

From the International Space Station to Dedicated Satellites

Moran's short-term plan is to use the soon-to-be-retired International Space Station (ISS) modules as a testing ground. Russia will withdraw from operations in 2028, and NASA also plans to decommission after 2031. At that time, the existing solar panels, power distribution, and cooling systems can be directly used for Mining Rig operations, requiring only the ASIC Mining Rig to be sent up to validate the concept.
