The former UFC champion stated that Ireland should take advantage of the main benefits of bitcoin — decentralization and growth potential. According to him, cryptocurrency was created to "return power to ordinary people."

"The Irish Bitcoin reserve will give strength to the people’s money," McGregor wrote on social media.

The athlete plans to discuss all the details of the national cryptocurrency reserve with experts during an online discussion via X Spaces. It is also reported that McGregor will meet with the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who made bitcoin a legal tender and buys BTC daily at the government's expense.

In addition, David Bailey, the CEO of the popular publication Bitcoin Magazine, reacted to the candidate's initiative. He suggested that McGregor meet with the Vice President of the United States to discuss a strategic bitcoin reserve. This topic concerns not only Ireland but also America. Donald Trump promised to establish a BTC stockpile after the elections. While this is still under discussion, some American states are actively promoting relevant legislation.

McGregor is a candidate for the presidency of Ireland

McGregor announced his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland in March 2025. His campaign focuses on fighting crime and tightening immigration policy. The proposal to create a bitcoin reserve was unexpected.

The presidential elections in Ireland must be held by November 11, 2025. It is still unknown how seriously voters and political elites will take McGregor's initiative. He currently has no support from major political parties.
