The new leadership of the Ethereum Foundation outlines strategies to accelerate the upgrade cycle aimed at a hundredfold expansion.
The new leadership of the Ethereum Foundation outlines future development strategies
On May 7th, Ethereum completed the Pectra network upgrade, marking the beginning of a new development phase. The newly appointed co-CEOs Tomas Stanczak and Shay Wong recently gave an interview, elaborating on their ideas and determination to drive change.
The two responsible persons responded to multiple issues of concern to the community:
Shay Wong stated that he joined the foundation in 2017 and served as a core protocol researcher, participating in the transition to proof of stake. Tomasz Stanczak founded Nethermind in 2017 and has accumulated extensive experience in infrastructure and MEV solutions.
The two emphasized that the foundation needs to think long-term and become the manager of the ecosystem. They hope to improve the internal structure, accelerate processes, and allow more people to participate in decision-making. Tomasz stated: "We need to clarify our North Star goals and increase speed. We need to optimize the developer onboarding process, communicate with DeFi builders, clarify the roadmap, and improve communication to avoid the 'ivory tower' image."
Regarding the issues of slow response to community feedback and insufficient communication, the two believe that these can be addressed through process optimization. They emphasize the need to be product-centric and to focus more on practical applications and user needs. Tomasz said: "We need to bring application developers into the planning stage earlier, and actively seek out those who are most likely to oppose a feature and listen to their opinions from the start."
In terms of metrics for measuring success, they proposed initial goals: to expand threefold this year and a total of tenfold next year. Dankrad also proposed a long-term goal of a hundredfold within four years. This will become the anchor for the organization's research and development.
Regarding the positioning of the foundation, the two stated that the foundation should intervene when certain resources are lacking in the ecosystem, but primarily as a coordinator rather than an owner. The foundation will not directly build applications or infrastructure, but rather hopes to connect various resources and help founders solve early-stage issues.
In terms of the specific roadmap, they plan to shorten the hard fork cycle to once every 6 months. The next upgrade, Fusaka, is targeted for September-October this year, followed by the Amsterdam upgrade planned to be completed by the end of next year, which will include acceleration of L1 expansion. At the same time, the foundation is adjusting internal processes to accommodate a faster delivery pace and involve application developers earlier.
