A Belgian court sentenced three people to 12 years in prison for kidnapping the wife of a cryptocurrency investor—The masterminds are still on the run.

The court in Brussels sentenced three men to 12 years in prison for kidnapping the wife of Belgian cryptocurrency investor, Stephane Winkel, in December 2024. The incident occurred when the group abducted her outside their home and forced her into a van, but Winkel was able to alert the police in time, leading to the arrest of the attackers.

The defendants were convicted of kidnapping and attempting to extort money using cryptocurrency. They claimed to act under the threat from unidentified "sponsors," but the court dismissed this reasoning. In addition to prison sentences, the court also ordered more than 1 million euros in compensation for the victims. Winkel, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency field, promised to return to cryptocurrency education but with a safer approach.
