In June, Paradigm published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks," which brought the concept of Intent( into the public eye for the first time. Related protocols and infrastructure rapidly developed, becoming a hot topic of discussion in the crypto world at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. As Mindao, the founder of DForce, stated: the crypto space has always been focused on extreme abstraction and automated operations, from aggregators, centralized exchanges, contract wallets to cross-chain DeFi, all of which are doing this work, along with Chainlink and the recent automated middleware, as well as Telegram bots.

Intended to bring new changes. In the past, the focus was on product interaction, while in the era of artificial intelligence, the focus shifts to human-computer interaction. AI/language models contain great potential to enhance cryptocurrency interaction.

01, Top-down Anoma and Bottom-up Unibot

In the past six months, agreements, projects, and infrastructure related to intentions have been booming one after another. Here, I will not explain the concepts in detail, but instead provide a glimpse of the overall picture through two typical cases.

The most notable project among related ones is the Anoma Foundation. In a context where Layer 1 is highly homogenized, the Anoma Foundation has secured a total of $57.8 million in three rounds of financing, thanks to its intention-centric architecture Anoma) Dapp full-stack architecture ( and Namada) privacy Layer1(, ranking seventh in the financing of unissued token Layer 1/Layer 2 projects.

Looking back at Anoma's presentation at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that Anoma's uniqueness lies in the fact that all interactions begin with intention. The intentions expressed by users are processed through Anoma's black box architecture ), also known as the magic box (, to realize the core transaction process based on intention interactions.

  • User Interaction: Users send transparent, private, or protected intentions to the Anoma black box architecture.
  • Intent collection and matching: The parser collects intents, performs balanced state transitions, and achieves counterparty matching.
  • Transaction Processing: The matched transaction is submitted to the cryptographic memory pool, and the validator sends the block packaged by the proposer to the execution layer, completing execution and validity verification, and finally updating the state root.

The Anoma team has identified the pain points at the underlying level of blockchain protocols and reviewed the evolution from Bitcoin's scriptable settlement to Ethereum's programmable settlement. They believe that the limitations of the existing architecture require application protocols to have at least one Web2 component, making it impossible to achieve counterparty discovery and resolution. The Anoma architecture is regarded as the third-generation Dapp architecture for blockchain protocols, allowing users to define the desired outcome state and achieve efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intent level.

The Heliax team, composed of 37 interdisciplinary members, is currently responsible for the development of Anoma. Although progress is slow, a complete innovative ecosystem has been established:

  • Anoma: Intent-Centric Universal Dapp Architecture
  • Namada: The privacy settlement Layer 1 of the Anoma ecosystem
  • AnomaVM: Simplifying DApp development on Anoma
  • Typhon: Improved consensus based on Cosmos
  • Taiga: Provides a composable privacy unified execution environment

Although Anoma is highly favored by institutions such as CMCC Global, Electric Capital, and Delphi Digital, it has only laid the technical foundation so far, and we have yet to see exciting practical applications.

On the other hand, the TG Bot has opened up the imagination for the implementation of Intent segmentation scenarios with on-chain automated trading tools. Unibot is a trading bot based on Telegram that allows users to conduct automated DEX trading via Telegram, offering features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and MEV resistance. Unibot replaces the cumbersome interactions of Uniswap based on Intent, providing a convenient DeFi experience. Unibot has also spawned a number of TG Bot clones, with the current total market value of the TG Bot sector approaching $200 million.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation. Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; TG Bot, although it brings a new on-chain interactive interface, is not smart enough and has security risks.

Both paths lead to the same goal, aiming to simplify user interaction experiences by introducing a new programmable and customizable user interaction interface - User Intent Layer ) 用户意图层 (, allowing users to bypass complex on-chain interactions and define transaction status based on intent.

02, AI is the New UI: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction

The AI paradigm is introducing a third user interface paradigm in the history of computing, shifting towards a new interaction mechanism where users tell the computer what they want rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing
  • Paradigm Two: Command-based Interaction Design
  • Paradigm Three: Intent-Based Result Specification

Every revolution in interaction modes throughout history has led to entirely new business models. Generative AI based on large language models brings disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming traditional software UI interactions into conversations with a ChatGPT chat window, creating an unprecedented experience. LLM + crypto introduces a new proposition of intent-based interactions in the crypto world, with LLM having the potential to make blockchain interactions smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

03. The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status and Trends

Intent is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web 2.0 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intent, and the search engine provides relevant results to satisfy that intent.

With the rise of e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and eBay, a significant shift in intent-based architecture has occurred. Users can express their intent to purchase products, while the platform takes care of logistics. In 2017, Gartner officially introduced the concept of Intent-based Networking ), presenting users with an interface where they only need to express what they want, and the platform handles the business details.

Intent-based networking is the trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Andrew Lerner, Vice President of Research at Gartner, pointed out in 2017 that this will be the next milestone in the field of networking.

In the evolution from Web2 to Web3, the concept of intent in Web3 is not clear, but there are some consensus:

  • Paradigm Definition: Intent is a set of declarative constraints that allow users to delegate the creation of transactions to a specialized network of third-party participants while retaining full control over the process.

  • Anoma definition: Intent is a message sent by the user to express custom preferences, defining constraints on what the system can do, rather than a specific execution path.

  • Propellerheads definition: The intention is the part of the transaction that requires assistance from others, simplifying complex transactions by outsourcing the difficult parts to third parties.

In Web3 intent-based transaction scenarios, users create intents off-chain, outsource to a resolver off-chain, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions while retaining complete control over the process on-chain, thus lowering the threshold for on-chain interactions.

The intention is to bring the LLM architecture concept - intent centric(, an architecture centered around user intent). Currently, relevant crypto protocols and infrastructure are embedded in the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+Crypto brings a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing users' intentions to be directly converted into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions like using Siri, and the robot/AI Agent/third-party parser helps complete complex on-chain operations. The future of intent-based Web3 interactions being intelligent has the potential to greatly reduce the complexity of user on-chain interactions.

Behind the explosive popularity of TG Bot: The intention to trade is knocking on the door of intelligent interaction in Web3

AI is the New UI, more and more Web3 projects are exploring the magic of intent. Whether it is intent-based Dapps or intent-based underlying architecture, they release the potential of intent from different perspectives. We attempt to categorize it into four major types from an interactive perspective and track the latest status and trends:

  1. Infrastructure ( Intent-Centric Architecture Layer )

    • DappOS
    • Flash 2.0 SUAVE
    • Anoma
    • Cow Protocol
  2. Supporting facilities ( related to intent and account abstraction wallets )

    • ERC 4337
    • Account abstraction related: packer infrastructure, wallet SDK
    • Intent-related: Juvix, Seaport, Gelato, okcontract, Delegatable, Hyper Oracle, symmio
  3. Enterprise applications ( integrate Dapp's intent infrastructure, API, modular intent layer, domain-specific parser )

    • Trading Parser API: PropelleHeads
    • Intent API:EnsoFinance
    • Intent Trading Infrastructure: Bob the Solver, Brink
    • Composable Intent Tool: Essential
  4. Consumer applications ( user interactive smart interfaces such as wallets, DEX, Web3 AI Agents, smart search engines )

    • Wallet: Safe, Bitconomy, Argent, Ambire, Sequence, Versa, A3SProtocol
    • DEX:CowSwap, Paraswap, Uniswap, 1inch, BananaHq, basedmarkets
    • Intelligent Frontend: Unibot, Dora, Web3 Analytics, kaito.ai

Infrastructure, supporting facilities, and enterprise applications attempt to address the underlying challenges of intent-based realization, but infrastructure cannot be achieved overnight. The trends at the consumer application layer are what truly excite, as the evolution of interaction gateways such as wallets and DEX demonstrates the potential for intelligent interaction.

Wallet Intelligence: ERC-4337 introduces a new user intent layer (UserOps), allowing users to express intent, which packers convert into executable signed transactions. In recent months, the number of ERC-4337 users has significantly increased, with ZeroDev, Biconomy, and Safe modular smart accounts being the most motivated to drive AA+ intent, potentially leading to wallet intelligence in the future (SCW).

DEX Architecture Transformation: Intent Based Trading ( Intent Based Trading ) aims to improve capital efficiency and user interaction experience. CoW Hooks link complex actions together, UniswapX allows users to sign intents for off-chain matching and on-chain settlement. Similar to BananaHq, Brink, basedmarkets, the number of intent-based DEXs is gradually increasing, and the new Intent-based RFQ narrative ( SYMMIO ) is unfolding. As more DEXs and aggregators shift to intent-based architecture, the DEX landscape is undergoing significant changes.

Intelligent Interaction Entry: Similar to the transformation of Web3 front-end interaction interfaces by TG Bot, the interaction entry focuses on understanding user intentions and systematically converting them into automated, actionable tasks. Not only are there TG Bot-like trading robots, but Web3 AI Agents and Web3 intelligent search engines are also making Web3 interactions more intelligent.

04. Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Interaction in Web3

The past Web3 product interaction experience has hindered widespread adoption, and the on-chain wealth effect has masked many product issues. Now, liquidity and user attention are fragmented, and on-chain liquidity is scarce.

At the ETHCC conference in July, developers extensively discussed the future of intent-centric approaches and how to help users interact with DApps more intelligently in Web3. However, there are still many challenges to the implementation of intent-centric applications.

  • Lack of intent-related programming languages ( such as Juvix )
  • Lack of a suitable intent architecture ( like Anoma )
  • Lack of specific domain parsers ( like Bob The Solver )
  • The intention is to achieve centralization and closure ( like CowSwap )
  • Lack of front-end intent recognition parser ( like Unibot )
  • Lack of composable intent to implement ( like Br
