NFTs produced from the 99-year-old artist's computer sell for $1.2 million

Vera Molnar pioneered the use of computer-generated art in the second half of the 20th century.
NFTs, created by Hungarian artist Vera Molnar in collaboration with Martin Grasser, were sold at Sotheby's Dutch auction for 631 Ether, or $1.2 million.
According to the announcement on July 26, the collection "Themes and Variation" consists of 500 collectibles through an algorithm combination of 170 color palettes. Auctioneers said:
Themes and Variations is an extension of Molnar's 2% d'ordre generative protocol that explores the power of the grid and the randomness of color. Molnar further developed the system by humorously including the appearance of the letters N, F and T.
Born in Budapest in 1924, Molnar was one of the first pioneers of computer-generated images in 1959. Molnar's work, who previously lectured at the University de Paris, has been featured in important European exhibitions. Molnar, who stepped into the world of NFT in 2022, said:
After decades of exploring how systems and computers can produce art, I see this collaboration with Sotheby's and Art Blocks as a result of those efforts.
The collection has surpassed 589 Ether in trading volume on secondary markets such as OpenSea. At the time of publication, the base price of the collection rose over 100% from 1.52 Ether shortly after the sale ended.
