Scroll zkEVM Introduction: From Setting Up a Wallet to Mastering On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe
Scroll zkEVM Beginner's Guide
This article will introduce beginners to how to interact with the decentralized application (L2) on the Layer 2 network (Dapps). We will take Scroll zkEVM as an example to explore how to get started with this L2 network and interact with Ethereum L2 Dapps. The skills learned in this guide can, in principle, be applied to other L2 networks. To better illustrate, we will use an on-chain tic-tac-toe Dapp running on the Scroll L2 network as an example.
Preparation: Install a Crypto Wallet
If you have already installed a cryptocurrency wallet ( like Metamask ), you can skip this step. Otherwise, please install the suitable cryptocurrency wallet based on your browser or mobile device.
Step 1: Set up the Scroll L2 testnet and Goerli testnet
Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet. This is a Layer 2 network compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which means that smart contracts written for Ethereum can be deployed on the Scroll zkEVM using the same tools. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Goerli testnet on Ethereum L1. This means that the Scroll L2 network will batch transactions and send them to the Goerli L1 network for "final confirmation." Therefore, it still relies on the "security" of the Ethereum L1 network, but achieves scalability since not every transaction needs to be published on the Ethereum network.
You can add the network to your crypto wallet according to the instructions on the official Scroll website. At the same time, if you haven't added it yet, you should also add the Goerli network to your wallet.
Step 2: Obtain Goerli Testnet ETH
After completing the network setup, you need to obtain some Goerli ETH from a faucet. There are multiple faucets to choose from; some require registration or login, while others use a proof-of-work ( PoW ) mechanism. You can choose one or more faucets to get enough ETH.
Step 3: "Bridge" ETH from Goerli to Scroll L2
The next step is to bridge some ETH from Goerli to the Scroll L2 testnet. You can use the bridging interface provided by Scroll to complete this action. Follow the instructions on the page to transfer ETH to your address on the Scroll L2 testnet. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.
Step 4: Experience the On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game
Once your ETH is successfully transferred to Scroll L2, you can start experiencing the on-chain tic-tac-toe game. Connect your wallet to the game page and then create a new game. You need to add a friend's address as an opponent, or use another wallet address of yours as the second player.
After creating the game, select your game from the list, and then you can start playing this on-chain tic-tac-toe game. This game also has an interesting feature: if you make a mistake at any step, or if you don't want to lose the game, you can "reset" the game at any time.
Step Five ( Optional ): Explore other Dapps on Scroll L2
If you want to test more Dapps and games on Scroll, you can check the Dapps list provided by Scroll, which contains various interesting applications for you to explore.
By following the steps above, you can start experiencing decentralized applications on Scroll zkEVM. This not only helps you understand how L2 networks operate, but also allows you to personally experience the innovative applications brought by blockchain technology. As more developers join the Scroll ecosystem, we can expect to see more interesting and practical Dapps emerge.
