[Analyst: Trump is expected not to raise tariffs on other countries to 50% like Brazil] Trump stated that the latest tariff rates are calculated based on common sense, trade deficits, and the treatment the U.S. has received over the years. However, the letter to Brazil indicates that Trump also sees tariffs as a tool to influence foreign policies he disagrees with. An optimistic interpretation is that Brazil's tariffs do not set a significant precedent for tariffs on other countries. Owen Tedford, a senior analyst at Beacon Policy Advisors, stated that the August 1 deadline gave Brazil a chance to negotiate taxation. He (Trump) is trying to do things that he believes will help his fren (former Brazilian president Bolsonaro). This is largely a one-time affair, and I do not think tariffs on other countries will jump from 10% on April 2 to 50%.
